CLEVELAND (WJW) - At the Department of Public Safety in Columbus on Monday afternoon, Governor Mike DeWine and Director Andy Wilson announced a new tool aimed at helping families prepare new drivers for the road.

"We know inexperience behind the wheel, inexperience is really a number one killer. The number one cause of crashes," DeWine said.

The timing isn't accidental.

A new state law takes effect on Tuesday, requiring 18, 19 and 20-year-olds to complete the same training as 16 and 17-year-olds. That means classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel time and supervised driving hours.

The new technology being rolled out, coinciding with the new law, is called the Road Ready App, designed to help parents teach their children to drive in real-time.
