People facing housing issues or in need of housing now face new hurdles, as provincial legislation is set to put more onus on landlords regarding drug activity on properties.
Bill 10, Protect Ontario Through Safer Streets and Stronger Communities Act, 2025, received royal assent in June. It makes several changes including enacting the Measures Respecting Premises with Illegal Drug Activity Act, which aims to criminalize landlords, including corporate landlords, agencies and municipal landlords, who intentionally or unintentionally permit their properties “to be used in relation to offences … that relate to the production or trafficking of a controlled substance or precursor, or of cannabis.”
