COLUMBUS, Ohio — Another downtown building is getting a new purpose as housing. The former YMCA in downtown Columbus is undergoing a massive renovation to be converted into apartments.
The cost of the project is expected to cost $66 million. It’s being covered by a combination of private money along with city, state and federal dollars. Woda Cooper Companies is the developer tasked with turning the building around.
The 235,000 square foot building once housed about 400 men in dorm-like rooms. It also provided other YMCA services such as programming and recreation. The dormitory floors are being converted in a range of apartments from studios to 3-bedroom. The dormitory walls are being taken out so new walls can be constructed to make space for 121 units that meet modern requirements.
