MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A man wanted for murder died after he shot himself while bounty hunters tried to take him into custody at a Wendy's in East Memphis late Sunday night, police said.

According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), officers responded just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday to a shooting at the fast food restaurant on Highland Street between Spottswood and Park avenues.

Investigators learned that the man "fired shots at several males who were attempting to take him into custody," police said in a report. The man then turned the gun on himself, police said. The men were described as "bounty hunters."

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.
