GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An upcoming showcase will demonstrate how art can help support people through their mental health struggles.

The Shining Through Art Show and Auction by be nice. is scheduled for Oct. 16 at the Goei Center.

Ivan Jenson will be one of the featured artists. He said previously he worked as an artist in New York City, where he found some success in the 1980s. In the early 2000s, he suffered from clinical depression and joined family in Grand Rapids.

"In a way, this nervous breakdown that I had was fate because when I recovered, I had a new perspective on life," Jenson said, explaining his experiences in both New York and Grand Rapids informed the way he viewed things.

He said since moving to Grand Rapids, he became a published writer and has since sold a screen
