Angola, Ind. (WPTA) - For decades, Tom’s Donuts has been more than just a stop for a dozen glazed and a coffee - it’s part of the community.
Things at ‘The Donut Capital of the World’ are a bit more sad than usual right now after the man behind the iconic donut shop, Tom Saylor, passed away last week.
Saylor opened Tom’s Donuts on Lake James in 1970.
“He just took duct tape and cut the word ‘Tom’s’ out of duct tape and put it in the corner of the sign,” said his son, Shane Saylor.
“We’d wash dishes and stand on milk crates,” said his son, Todd Saylor. “That’s where the legacy began, right here.”
But before he was known as the donut guy, Todd and Shane say their dad was known as ‘coach.’
