OMAHA, Neb. —

The Intertribal Powwow at Metropolitan Community College has become a yearly gathering place for tribes across Nebraska and beyond.

"We have tribal representation from the four tribes in Nebraska. They are the Omaha. They are the Winnebago, the Ho-Chunk people. They are the Shawnee. And we have the members of the East Santee Dakota people here. And so -- but one of our host drums is actually from my reservation from Rosebud, South Dakota. So, you know, our singers and dancers, they come from afar," Steve Tamayo, a powwow committee member, said.

While drums and dancing are at the heart of the powwow, organizers say it is also about education, showing the wider community the importance of keeping these traditions alive.
