VIRGINIA, Minn. (Northern News Now) - Two 15-year-old boys were rescued on Saturday afternoon after falling into a mine pit on the Iron Range.
After receiving a report that a teenager had fallen down a 100-foot cliff into a mine pit near the Mesabi Trail access point on 3rd Street North in Virginia, six members of the Virginia Fire Department jumped into action for what they knew would be an all-hands-on-deck rescue.
Firefighter and paramedic Trevor Smith says they faced major challenges saving the two boys because they had wandered onto private mine property that was tough to reach by both land and water.
“Everybody had ideas we brought to the table quickly because we realized it was a complex rescue,” said Smith.
