A Minnesota couple is facing criminal charges after their 10-year-old autistic daughter died in a filthy bedroom where she'd been confined to an enclosed safety bed, which had been designed to keep her safe but crushed her after her parents allegedly neglected to make repairs and misused the equipment.

Heather Lynn Cross, 49, and Darcy Ronald Cross, 57, were each charged in Crow Wing County District Court with one count of felony second-degree manslaughter and one count of gross misdemeanor contributing to the need for child protection or services.

According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement went to the couple's home on on County Highway 1 in rural Pine River on Aug. 25 on a report of a 10-year-old child who'd been crushed by her bed.
