COLUMBIA — Columbia Parks and Recreation hosted a meeting at Douglass Park Monday evening for community members to provide feedback on the proposed changes to the basketball courts at the park.

These changes include relocating the small park shelter, adding LED lighting, putting in new goals and renaming the court to honor late Mizzou women's basketball coach Willie Cox.

This project has been in the works for years despite funding issues and community concerns.

Community members who showed up to Douglass Park Monday expressed confusion in the choice to rename the court after a Mizzou coach rather than a member of the Douglass community.

"My mom, Jonnie Cooper, was a figure in the community," Stephen Cooper said. "She kept young kids out of trouble. Where is her plaque?"
