Glenn Maxwell's shocking luck has claimed him again, with a broken arm forcing the Australian star out of the T20 series against New Zealand.

He was bowling to Mitch Owen in the nets when his big-hitting teammate launched into a drive that hit Maxwell near the wrist.

They were training at Mount Maunganui ahead of the three-game T20 tour, which starts on Wednesday.

NSW wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe has been called up as the Victorian's replacement.

Maxwell will need medical advice on the injury and it's unclear when he will play next.

After the New Zealand series, the Australian T20 team will host India in a month's time for a five-game series.
