BATH, Maine — General Dynamics Bath Iron Works on Saturday christened the U.S. Navy's newest guided missile destroyer, the future USS Louis H. Wilson (DDG 126).
The vessel is the shipyard's first Flight III destroyer and is named for Gen. Louis H. Wilson Jr., a Medal of Honor recipient and former commandant of the Marine Corps, according to BIW.
About 1,500 shipbuilders, family members, and guests attended the ceremony, which included speeches from Gov. Janet Mills and Sen. Angus King.
Charles F. Krugh, president of BIW, told attendees that Gen. Wilson's bravery and long service inspire the shipbuilders responsible for constructing DDG 126 and preparing it for delivery to the U.S. Navy.
The destroyer is expected to sail in the coming weeks.
