GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) — A likely "hoax call" prompted a brief lockdown at the University of Florida Monday night after gunshots were reported at Smathers Library.
An alert sent out by the university around 9:30 p.m. instructed students to avoid the area or secure themselves in a place nearby. However, officials quickly confirmed that no shots were fired at the library.
The lockdown was lifted within about 30 minutes of the initial alert. Officials said the incident was "consistent with hoax calls" and that no criminal activity was found.
