Last week the government confirmed plans to introduce a digital ID – the updated version of an ID scheme long championed by Tony Blair and more recently amplified by the think tank Labour Together . Keir Starmer officially announced it during his speech at his Global Progress Action Summit , claiming it was part of Britain’s “patriotic national renewal”.

Let’s be clear: there is nothing progressive about this. Scapegoating migrants and expanding surveillance is not renewal at all. It is the hostile environment continued – more state control, less freedom.
