KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Transportation plans to demolish the northbound I-29 bridge over US-169 and put a new one up in its place this spring. That work will be taking place just weeks or perhaps days before the World Cup begins.
Kansas City International Airport is just a few miles north on I-29 of the north end of the detour for this project where many of the 600,000 fans in town for the World Cup will be arriving.
As Kansas City prepares for the World Cup, orange barrel season may be beginning a little earlier than we're used to in 2026.
"June 11th to July 16th will pretty much be a moratorium on a lot of work," MoDOT Kansas City District Engineer Greg Bolon said.
