OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) - A historic live oak tree in downtown Ocean Springs on Washington Avenue is now set to be removed due to significant structural decay, insect damage and a high risk of collapse.
After a recommendation from a team of arborists, the Board of Aldermen approved the removal during a special-called meeting on Monday.
A survey showed the likelihood of the tree falling is ‘imminent,’ which could cause damage to nearby buildings or injuries to people in the area.
The board says remnants of the tree will be retained for future use as part of an art project or memorial.
At this time, there is no timeline for when it will be removed.
