PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) -- A man was arrested in connection with a Portsmouth house fire Sunday afternoon that left two officers injured.
Officers responded to the 4500 block of Caroline Avenue around 2:45 p.m. for a report of a domestic dispute.
When they arrived, officers located a woman and interviewed her.
They then smelled gas and smoke, leading them to discover a man, who was later identified as 32-year-old Carlos Chavez Garcia, setting the house on fire. Police say the officers attempted to rescue Garcia from the fire, but he resisted and fought them.
Both officers suffered injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. They have since been released.
Garcia was taken into custody and was charged with arson, obstruction of justice and three counts of animal cruelty.
