Former Scotland forward Steven Fletcher has said it’s “the right time” to hang up his boots, after announcing his retirement from football.

Fletcher is drawing a line under his playing career at the age of 38, and thanked supporters as he reflected on his “pride and gratitude” after 21 years as a professional.

The striker made his Hibs debut in April 2001 and went on to play for Burnley, Wolves, Sunderland, Marseille, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke City, Dundee United and Wrexham.

Fletcher became a full international in 2008 and represented Scotland 33 times, scoring ten goals for his country.

In a message published on Instagram, he wrote: “After a lot of thought, I feel the time is right to retire from football.
