The death of Assata Shakur Sept. 25 put an end to efforts from state and federal officials to return one of New Jersey's most notorious fugitives to the country.
Shakur, whose legal name was Joanne Chesimard, was convicted in 1977 of killing State Trooper Werner Foerster in a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike four years earlier. She escaped from a Hunterdon County correctional facility in 1979 and eventually fled to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum.
At the time of her death, Shakur was one of more than a dozen people on the New Jersey State Police "Most Wanted" list . The FBI and state attorney general offered rewards of up to $2 million combined for "information leading to the safe return" of Shakur to the United States to face justice.
