Sleep-aid products — including some marketed to kids — have been found to contain far more melatonin than is outlined on the labels.

One product was found to contain four times the listed amount, according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration ( TGA ).

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone which helps to regulate the body clock, but it is possible to overdose on supplements.

Children are especially at risk of melatonin overdoses.

The symptoms caused by taking too much melatonin include vomiting, nausea, high and low blood pressure, and alopecia, according to Health Direct .

For children who suffer with seizure disorders, the TGA warned melatonin can also increase the frequency of seizures.
