ANN ARBOR, Mich. — In a college football world where money and playing time are the two motivating factors for players, Greg Crippen is an outlier.

The Michigan offensive lineman watched as player after player, transfer after transfer, came in and got an opportunity to start for the Wolverines at center. Andrew Vastardis, a former walk-on. Transfer Olu Oluwatimi. Transfer Drake Nugent.

Even last year, in Crippen’s senior year, he lost the starting job to open the season to Dominick Guidice, a converted former offensive lineman. His first career start didn’t come until the Wolverines’ sixth game of the season, but the change was pivotal. It not only gave Crippen the confidence that he could do it, but paved the way for his final year in the maize and blue.
