An intense intradivision clash will kick off the 2025 Major League Baseball postseason.
While Tigers-Guardians might not be Red Sox-Yankees, the American League Central rivals are building on a bitterness that has been mounting over the past year.
The Guardians won the division despite trailing the Tigers by 15½ games on July 6. Cleveland proceeded to go 48-26 after that, including winning five of six against Detroit during the final two weeks of the season. The improbable comeback is the largest deficit any MLB team has faced and still won the division.
Cleveland won the AL Central last year, too, despite a furious second-half rally by Detroit, which made the postseason as a wild card and beat the Astros in Houston. That set up an AL Division Series matchup between the Guardians and Tigers, which Cleveland won in five games.
