WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats voted down a Republican funding bill to keep the government open Tuesday evening; with this development, the federal government will shut down just past midnight on Wednesday.
The White House’s Office of Management and Budget has issued a memo saying that "affected agencies should now execute their plans for an orderly shutdown."
This is the first time the federal government has shut down in almost seven years. During Trump's first term, the country saw a monthlong government shutdown , the longest in U.S. history.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said that Republicans in Congress are trying to "bully" Democrats by refusing to compromise on health care spending, the main sticking point of negotiations.
