(Undated) — A controversial decision out of Washington is stirring emotions in South Dakota. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said last week that 20 soldiers awarded the Medal of Honor for their role in the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre will keep those medals. Former State Senator Troy Heinert, who pushed for Congress to rescind the medals back in 2021, is calling Hegseth’s decision disappointing but says the fight to correct history isn’t over. Historians note the U.S. Army killed up to 300 Native Americans that day, including women and children, on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
