Cleveland Guardians outfielder Chase DeLauter will experience more than just the typical jitters of a playoff atmosphere against the Detroit Tigers.
DeLauter is also set to make his MLB debut during the American League Wild Card Series against the Tigers, beginning on Tuesday. The 23-year-old is the No. 2 overall prospect in the Cleveland organization and the No. 10 overall outfielder in baseball.
The former No. 16 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft actually recovered from multiple surgeries this year but is now set to make his MLB debut as a member of the 26-man roster coming off the taxi squad, even though it is no longer the regular season and the pressure is fully on for Cleveland.
DeLauter has not played since July 11, so he will start his MLB career coming off a lot of rest but not a lot of momentum.
How did DeLauter prepare for this moment?
Here is more (via The Athletic):
"J.T. Maguire, the Guardians’ outfield coach, delivered a crash course to DeLauter on Monday afternoon, with a curriculum on the Cleveland outfield, on the green-padded wall, on where and how the grass meets the dirt track, on shadows and routes and footwork, jumps and angles, wind patterns and hitter tendencies, and third decks and sellout crowds."
That sounds easy enough!
What players made their MLB debut in the postseason?
Here are the others, via MLB.com:
- Ryan Weathers, Padres (Oct. 6, 2020)
- Shane McClanahan, Rays (Oct. 5, 2020)
- Alex Kirilloff, Twins (Sept. 30, 2020)
- Adalberto Mondesi, Royals (Oct. 30, 2015)
- Mark Kiger, Athletics (Oct. 13, 2006)
Curiously enough, Kiger never actually played again the MLB aside from the postseason.
