MADISON COUNTY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- Madison County confirmed to NewsChannel 9 that a man who contracted eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) passed away due to complications from the virus.

The county released back in late September that there was a human case of EEE, and the person was hospitalized.

"We are sad to hear a member of our community lost their life to this disease, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family," a county spokesperson told NewsChannel 9.

Currently, there is no vaccine or cure for EEE in humans. The virus can be contracted through mosquito bites, and the county urges residents to take measures to protect themselves.
