Niagara-on-the-Lake has spent more than $1.2 million to settle two lawsuits from local property owners that were launched during the previous council term.
Town officials said, in a Sept. 24 statement, the municipality had agreed to settle with Hummel Properties Inc., a prominent St. Davids developer, for $1 million because of the former council’s improper use of an interim control bylaw for a property at 2203 Niagara Stone Rd.
The vacant property is located across the street from The Old Winery Restaurant, between the Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Centre and Jackson Triggs Niagara Estate Winery.
About a week earlier, council decided during an in-camera meeting to settle with John Black, the owner of 27 Prideaux St. for $225,000.
