For decades, the Rev. Dr. Silas M. Townsend worked his nonprofit job, serving low-income communities in Burlington County, went home, had dinner with his family, then headed to the church he led in Camden to work some more.

He even devoted his weekends and vacation days to his community service mission.

Camden recognized Townsend’s dedication and commitment to the community on Sept. 21 by naming the street outside his church, St. John Baptist, after him.

" Anyone who puts in that much time of service needs to be recognized," said Councilman Falio Leyba-Martinez, who initiated renaming North 30th Street for Townsend.

A humble Townsend is still in disbelief.

“It’s almost surreal,” he said. “It’s God affirming the ministry that we have done together.”
