Mal Lanyon will complete his ascension as NSW Police commissioner when he is formally appointed on Wednesday, taking the reins from the retiring Karen Webb.

Mr Lanyon, a 37-year officer, started his career patrolling Sydney's inner west and will be back there for his appointment, to be held at the Balmain police station.
