More than two years after a fire broke out in the engine room of the 82-year-old bulk carrier Cuyahoga — and nearly a month after the vessel was towed for scrapping — the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) released its investigation report into the incident.

The May 2023 fire was the first of two in less than a year that ultimately brought an end to the career of the oldest operating Canadian cargo vessel on the Great Lakes.

Owned by Lower Lakes Towing Ltd., the Canadian division of Rand Logistics Inc. , the 202-metre-long ship departed Marblehead, Ohio with a load of granular crushed stone, bound for Kingsville, Ont. on Lake Erie, said the TSB’s report.
