[DES MOINES, Iowa] — The Des Moines Schools Superintendent, Dr. Ian Roberts, has resigned from his position. His attorney, Alfredo Parrish, announced the resignation today.

Roberts was arrested by immigration officials on Friday. They claim he is in the country illegally. Last night, the Des Moines School Board placed him on unpaid leave . He is currently being held in the Woodbury County Jail in Sioux City. His lawyers have filed for a stay on his immigration and deportation case in Omaha, Nebraska.

Parrish said Roberts is an asset to the Des Moines community.
