DENVER (KDVR) — A 17-year-old was sentenced to 35 years in prison for shooting and killing a man at a party in Aurora last year.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that Xavier Garcia, 17, had been sentenced on Sept. 26. He pleaded guilty in July to second-degree murder in the shooting death of Joseph Martinez, 19.

On March 23, 2024, officers with the Aurora Police Department reported the shooting had happened at Victory Grange rental hall on North Tower Road after it had been rented out for a large party with primarily juveniles and young adults in attendance. The district attorney's office said Tuesday the party was organized and promoted by Garcia.
