JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Dogs and cats at the Jacksonville Humane Society were recently serenaded by eight cello and two violin performers.

For the third year, local music teacher Sabrina Calandro and a group of her adult and youth students performed for the shelter pets .

"Music has the ability to inspire, comfort and bring joy to the performer and the audience," she said.

Classical music can reduce stress in animals, according to the society, and the "cello can be especially calming, as its range and tones are similar to the human voice."

One of the youth performers , Julie Mallow, said, "I feel bad that I can’t adopt them all, but this is one way I can help them. It’s so nice seeing them all enjoy the music and fall asleep."
