CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Division of Highways has awarded a $6.67 million contract to extend the life of the Eugene A. Carter Bridge deck.

The contract was awarded to Triton Construction. The DOH said earlier in the month that it accepted bids for the project. Workers will put down a protective membrane and will then add a two-inch asphalt overlay on the bridge.

The membrane will be waterproof, which will aim to prevent large potholes from forming. On multiple occasions this year, extremely large potholes formed on the bridge and caused emergency repairs, which backed traffic up for miles.

DOH spokesman Brent Walker told MetroNews earlier in the month that the project should be complete later in the fall.

The DOH plans to do a full redecking of the bridge in 2027.
