LOUISVILLE, Ky. — West Nile Virus cases are rising in Jefferson County and the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness wants to make sure the community is aware.

According to a release from LMPHW, nine residents have contracted the virus and seven have needed to go to the hospital. Everyone infected with the virus are adults between 40 and 70 years old.

“We are seeing a higher-than-usual number of West Nile virus cases this season, and we urge residents to take mosquito prevention seriously,” said Connie Mendel, chief health strategist for LMPHW. “Assume mosquitoes are carrying West Nile virus no matter what ZIP code you live in. Please take precautions to avoid being bitten.”
