RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Virginia lawmakers in Washington are pointing fingers at each other over who is to blame if the government shuts down.

We’re also learning a little more about what’s at stake.

“This is not mandatory spending. This is discretionary spending. So things like the Smithsonian Institution, national parks, things like that will be shut down,” Rep. John McGuire, (R) VA-05, said.

Funding for social safety nets like WIC will quickly run out of remaining funds if the government shuts down.

Democrats worry the program may be unable to provide food for children and parents in need.

“It seems to me that the Trump administration wants to have a shutdown, and it’s just the American people who are going to get hurt, Virginia more so than any other state,” Rep. Jennifer McClella
