US President Donald Trump has given Hamas just days to accept a US-backed peace proposal for the conflict in Gaza, warning of "a very sad end" if the terrorist group were to reject the plan.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed to back the peace proposal as he spoke alongside President Trump at a media conference in Washington DC on Monday, local time.

The 20-point plan, aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza , includes a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza, and mediators Qatar and Egypt shared the proposal with Hamas late on Monday.

Hamas had not been involved in the negotiations that led to the proposal - which calls for the group to disarm.
