Portsmouth Naval Shipyard's 7,700-plus civilian employees were being asked to report for work Oct. 1 without assurance they’ll be spared from furloughs as a federal government shutdown loomed. Meanwhile, more than 100 New Hampshire Air National Guard workers at Pease in Portsmouth were expected to be furloughed, according to local leaders.
“All employees scheduled to work on Wednesday, Oct. 1 are expected to report for their regular shift to be notified of their status and receive further information,” the shipyard announced Tuesday, Sept. 30. “Due to the critical nature of the work, we anticipate the majority of our workforce will be excepted from furlough.”
