ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The City of Elmira has updated its street tree ordinance to improve the environment along its streets.

The new ordinance, effective as of Sept. 22, expands the list of tree species people can plant along streets.

This change is part of the Elmira Urban Green Equity Project (EUGE), a partnership with Cornell Cooperarive Extension of Chemung County and the Chemung County Planning Department.

EUGE works to increase green spaces and shade in Elmira to help lower city temperatures and improve quality of life.
