GRANT COUNTY — The Washington State Patrol bomb squad disposed of a live hand grenade Monday night, after police say a three-year-old boy discovered it.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post that the boy found the grenade in his family’s front yard in the 600 block of Willard Street in Hartline. The bomb squad determined the grenade was live and took it to a rural area north of town to dispose of it.

Authorities say the grenade was of a type used during the Second World War and had been exposed to the elements for some time.

It’s unknown to the sheriff’s office how the grenade ended up in the family’s front yard, and the amount of time it had been there.
