LANSING — Days after Michigan lawmakers assured the public they had reached a state budget agreement, details of the plan have yet to materialize.

Gov. Whitmer and legislative leaders from both parties said last week that they had reached a framework agreement that would avoid a shutdown — but the Legislature still has not updated on the status of more than $70 billion in state spending.

Despite the new fiscal year starting at midnight, Whitmer told state workers Tuesday that government operations would “continue as normal” even if a budget deal isn’t reached.

The announcement essentially called on state agencies to act as if a shutdown hasn’t happened in the next few days, even once the state is prohibited from new spending starting Oct. 1.
