Arizona state Rep. John Gillette is facing mounting criticism after posting on social media that people who “advocate for the overthrow of the American government” should be “tried convicted and hanged” — a statement he made in direct response to a video of Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal.

Gillette, a Republican from Kingman, made the post Wednesday on X, formerly Twitter. The post was a reply to a video clip of Jayapal, D-Wash., speaking about nonviolent protest strategies during a March episode of her “Resistance Lab” video series. The post now seems to have been deleted from Gillette’s timeline on X amid the controversy. ×
