DUBUQUE COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) - The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a new fraudulent tap-to-pay scam.

This is a new type of scam for the community that has “not likely been seen before,” according to the sheriff’s office.

In this scam, a scammer pretends to college money outside businesses for a sick person or other cause to gain sympathy from victims.

The scammer refuses cash and attempts to get victims to use tap-to-pay readers on the scammer’s personal phone for a fraudulent amount.

Authorities say victims reported the scammer making additional unauthorized transactions with their account information following the first transaction.

The sheriff’s office urges residents to avoid making any transactions with people they do not know on the sidewalk.
