The suspect in a fatal shooting Saturday near Bayou St. John was ordered to remain jailed pending a mental competency evaluation.

Enrique Garcia, 26, appeared Tuesday afternoon in Orleans Parish Magistrate Court for a Megan's Law bail hearing. Instead, Commissioner Joyce Sallah set a competency proceeding to begin Thursday.

Garcia was booked Saturday on counts of second-degree murder and simple burglary.

According to a police affidavit, he stole a gun from the house of a cousin and then shot Eliot Brown, a carpenter and artist, at his doorstep on Dumaine Street, in what neighbors described as a random attack. The assailant had knocked on other doors in the area before the 8 a.m. shooting, neighbors said.
