Starting in October, Kentucky’s Meals on Wheels program will face significant changes due to federal budget cuts and the end of COVID-19 relief funds.
These financial challenges are forcing local agencies to prioritize which seniors will continue to receive assistance, leaving hundreds without the vital service.
Jo Ann Orr volunteers to deliver five ready-made meals every Tuesday to seniors in Shively. However, the recent funding cuts mean her delivery list will drastically shrink.
“I had a list of 15, and when all this is over, I’ll have a list of 3,” Orr said.
The Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA), which oversees Meals on Wheels for more than 1,500 Kentuckians across seven counties, said the delivery program has lost $1.7 million, while cong
