Sacramento has chosen Maraskeshia Smith as its next city manager, marking the first time a Black woman will hold the role. Mayor Kevin McCarty announced her selection after a nationwide search. Smith, who is currently Santa Rosa’s city manager, has more than 20 years of experience in public service, including leadership roles in Oakland, Stockton, and Cincinnati. The Sacramento City Council will vote October 14 on her proposed three-year contract worth $339,000 annually. If approved, Smith will begin her position on January 5, 2026.
