BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Birmingham City Council passed an amendment Tuesday to add four cameras at railroad crossings.
City leaders said the extra cameras will be placed at crossings throughout District 7, which is in the southwestern part of the city. They said the cameras use artificial intelligence to detect a train's position.
Birmingham City Council President Darrell O'Quinn said the technology can be used to ease traffic congestion.
"That system is connected to dynamic messaging signs that are located in a perimeter around that area and communicate to drivers that they should avoid the crossing," O'Quinn said.
The city council did not say which crossings will receive a camera or when they'll be set up.
