A man has survived a serious single-vehicle crash after patrolling police discovered the driver trapped inside a car that had been ripped in half.

The 39-year-old man was taken to Westmead Hospital for mandatory testing after the crash in Cambridge Gardens, in Sydney's north west, at 1.25am on October 1.

Police are investigating whether speed or alcohol played a role in the crash, which saw the blue Ford Falcon XR6 collide with a tree, destroying the vehicle and damaging three parked cars.

Firefighters worked on the wreckage for around 90 minutes before freeing the driver from the car on Dunheved Road, Fire and Rescue NSW said.
