With just hours remaining before a potential government shutdown, lawmakers in Washington are scrambling to reach a deal.
As Congress negotiates a continuing resolution to keep the government funded, local organizations like the Food Bank for the Heartland are bracing for impact.
“It would be hard to meet demand if the government shuts down,” said Tim Williams of the Food Bank for the Heartland.

Williams noted that if programs like SNAP are paused, the need will only grow.
“A lot of people do live paycheck to paycheck,” Williams said. “Our most immediate concern, should a shutdown occur, would be the burden—the extra burden—that would be placed on our charitable pantry system.”
