A new era has begun as the state's new top law enforcer Mal Lanyon has officially been sworn in as the NSW Police Force's 24 th commissioner.

Speaking to a crowd outside Balmain Police Station in Sydney on Wednesday morning, Commissioner Lanyon paid tribute to his mentors, predecessors and his mother.

"I'd like to acknowledge specifically my mum who has come down from the coast, I know you'll cry," he said.

Having walked into Glebe Police Station 38 years ago as a 19-year-old probationary constable, Commissioner Lanyon specifically thanked former Glebe sergeant Ian Miller.

Sergeant Miller spent his 45-year career at Glebe and was one of the first faces to greet the now-commissioner on his first day on the job.
